GLP’s Inside Scoop from Outdoor Retailer (OR) Winter Market

Our founder Rob Holmes just returned from the Outdoor Retailer (OR) Winter Market in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had a great time reconnecting with partners and fostering new connections we hope to see grow in the future! Here are some of GLP’s highlights of the OR show.

The GLP team was in Salt Lake City earlier this summer while shooting one of our urban food films, so it was good to be back in SLC on familiar stomping grounds with some friendly faces!

We got to see some new initiatives our friends at Goal Zero are working on. Their solar power chargers are the best – we couldn’t do some of the extreme film work we do without them! We really love Goal Zero’s latest philanthropic activities.  In an effort to bring reliable power to people around the globe, Goal Zero’s “Share the Sun” campaign donates solar power through every product purchased.  We particularly love this project for its potential to positively impact the world.

What’s OR without a few beers with your buds?  We hosted an awesome happy hour fundraiser with our friends at Horny Toad to raise money for our latest film partner, the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Our event raised over $500, so we were psyched! The IRC helps refugees get involved with urban farming, generating a source of revenue for them and their families as well as helping them connect and become a valuable asset in their new communities. We also screened our new film, “Urban Roots in Salt Lake City,” and it was a huge hit!

While at OR we also heard news about an exciting new STEM partnership between Cascade Designs, Therm-a-rest, and Freewaters.  Together this dream team will be  providing hands-on water education for high school students in Ventura County, California. Students will be taught about water science and purification as they learn how to use technologies like the Cascade Designs SE200 Smart Electrochlorinator water purifier for emergency and disaster relief. The curriculum integrates various organizations, such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Naval Base Ventura County, and California State University of Channel Islands, that are leaders in the fields of education, water treatment, and disaster preparedness.

The goal? To provide students with real-world skills needed to become the next generation of global activists and scientists. The project will be funded in part by the sales of special Freewaters shoes that integrate Therm-a-rest footbeds.

And last but not least, Outdoor Retailer honored the great Yvon Chouinard. Rock climber, environmentalist and outdoor industry expert, Yvon is the founder of Patagonia and a true inspiration for us here at GLP and for outdoor adventurers everywhere!  Congrats Yvon, what a legacy!

OR was a great success! We look forward to our future conferences and upcoming trade shows. See where GLP Films is headed next
