GLP Co-Hosts Green Destinations Story Awards at ITB Berlin
Green Destinations is a non-profit foundation which has put many unknown and underrated places on the map over the last six years. It works as a global partnership, (and we are proud to be the official storytelling partner) with a community of changemakers all of whom are striving to recognize the stars of sustainable tourism around the world.
Every year Green Destinations puts out a call for these sustainable locations to stand up and be noticed. From this call out, their group of experts collates the Green Destinations Top 100. Then, just in case the industry doesn’t get the message loud and clear, they then invite each of these 100 beauties to apply for the annual Green Destinations Story Awards which are presented at the leading travel trade event, ITB Berlin.
This is where we step in, as proud co-sponsors of the Awards along with ITB itself and it’s one of the highlights of our calendar at GLP. Having an opportunity to meet and film such proactive proponents of sustainable tourism, as well as the expert panel who picks them, fits perfectly with our raison d’etre at GLP. When a destination is doing truly good work towards creating responsible and sustainable tourism, we want to tell its story. This is not only because we know for a fact that telling stories about sustainable tourism sells, but also because there is a sustainability domino effect in destinations. If they can do that, why can’t we?, they ask themselves. With our sustainable content strategy building and mentoring, they most definitely can.
Destinations will all be vying for business when the pandemic finally passes, and we are delighted that it’s the sustainable ones that are standing out on the map of resilience and recovery. Destinations such as Slovenia, which won three awards for excellent sustainable practices in Ljubljana, Brda and Kočevsko. Or lesser known island destinations such as Saba in the Caribbean, or Niue Island in the Pacific which is the first entire country to be designated as Dark Sky Place.
Green Destinations ensures that none of these places stay in the dark, and these Awards give us an opportunity to shine a light on them every year. You can see all of the winners in our video below. From sound festivals to sanctuaries, indigenous to island communities, thank you for your leadership in sustainability and also for sharing your stories.
