Where are the best sustainable destinations?
Sustainable tourism is a movement that depends on a lot of vital organs and muscles to maintain its momentum. Just like the human body, some of the key cogs are hidden while others that are more visible tend to get all the attention. We have created a series of articles (see links below) looking at the changemakers - the community cogs - because the best sustainable tourism destinations don’t change without individual input.
Some tourism destinations are still turning a blind eye to sustainability because either they have a reliable source of tourists who come back again and again for the coast, culture or cuisine, or it’s often because they don’t know where to start. However, it all starts somewhere, and even if your beaches and bars attract people right now, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be sustainable.
As well as ensuring that it adheres to ethical practices, a destination that is switched on to sustainability, and shouting about the fact, will speak to the rapidly changing attitudes of travelers. Recent research showed that 43% of US consumers wish there was more information about living sustainably, and that 84% say it’s important to buy sustainable products. Gen Z consumers are two to three times more likely than older consumers to be vegetarian/vegan and to ride a bike instead of driving.
There are many pillars of sustainability to start building or reinforcing if you are a sustainable tourism destination. Click on the links of the following articles to see case studies of a wide variety of places that have put the wheels of more mindful tourism in motion.
